Kirkstone House School

About Us

Kirkstone House is a small, friendly and nurturing school in which each individual is well known and supported in order that they can reach their potential. This is reflected in our excellent GCSE results.

Parents choose us because they know that their son or daughter will be supported to achieve their potential in every respect and that a ‘whole child’ approach which is integral to our ethos is adopted at all times. This is a school where the individual really does count.

We are non-selective in that we accept pupils of all abilities and parents who have children with different strengths have the opportunity to educate siblings with differing needs in one school. Our Junior School pupils enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum without the distraction of SATs. Pupils are encouraged to become self motivated learners and pupils have the benefit of being taught some subjects by Senior School subject specialists.

In Senior School, pupils benefit from an extensive curriculum and by being taught in small classes. There is a great deal of parental and pupil choice in terms of choice of subjects and in terms of the number of subjects studied. We offer a wide selection of GCSEs along with more vocational courses in the form of BTECs.

All staff in school are Dyslexia Aware and our aim is to remove this barrier to learning and to provide every assistance to dyslexic pupils to ensure that they can fully access the curriculum and gain enjoyment from their studies. This is a very tolerant community and pupils respect the fact that each of them learns at a different pace and with differing degrees of ease.

Kirkstone is a very happy school and pupils have high self esteem, excellent manners and respect for each other and for the adults with whom they work. This is a genuinely caring community and pupils leave us with an appreciation of responsibility and service.

The school is set in extensive grounds and pupils also benefit from our Environmental Centre which is a site of Special Scientific Interest.

Making a commitment to Independent Education is a great one and some parents choose to send their son or daughter here for key years such as in Year 5 as secondary education looms, or in Year 10 for GCSE study. However for some parents, the option of beginning in Kindergarten and remaining until the end of 6th Form at 18 years is highly desirable.

There are a multitude of reasons to choose Kirkstone House at both Junior and Senior School level, but don’t take our word for it, come and visit. As one of our pupils recently told the Inspectors, ‘It’s five star here!’

Former student, Libby Pearson, wrote a song detailing her experience throughout her time here at Kirkstone House. We invite you to listen to it below!
